Mid-Semester Break Pt. 1

From March 28th - April 7th I was on break from school and work (minus one day). Somehow I packed a lot of travel and new adventures with friends into that time and had the best experiences of not only my time in Australia, but in my life thus far. Part 1 will talk about my frist rugby game, the beach, and church for Easter. Eventually, I wil get to the rest in future blogs. Read on...

Friday is when it all started, the best week that I've had in my 20 years of living. That night we met up with Josh (our Aussie local mentioned back in "One Amazing Month" post) and his other Australian friends. What was the occasion you ask? First we met up at Josh's girlfriend's (very nice and pretty) place for shits and giggles before heading to my first rugby game! They're about 3 different types of rugby played in Australia (NRL, AFL, & Rugby Union) and each are represented in Brisbane with a professional team. Check out the link for more information because I don't really know the difference yet. Anyway, I went to see the Brisbane Broncos VS the Melbourne Storm at Suncorp Stadium.

The game/match (whatever it's called) was rather interesting. There were padless players, fireworks, multiple mascots and cute cheerleaders. Apparently, Melbourne Storm is one of the top teams in Australia. Although the Broncos held their own for a while and even were in the lead for a sec, it ended in a 26 to 32 defeat. None the less it was a great experience.

Moving on....
Before leaving Urbanest to go to the beach the next day, we met two new guys (Colin from South Africa and Lucas from Germany) who came along. The plan was to go to the Sunshine Coast to check out Noosa Beach over the first weekend of break because myself and most of the group had already been to Gold Coast numerous times. Unfortunately, the weather didn't permit so we ended up back at Surfers Paradise.

When we arrived at Surfers it turned out that it happened to be the beginning of the Surfers Paradise Festival complete with four different stages throughout the beach with different acts. The only act I watched was the Sam and Miri (not sure how to spell it) circus tricks one, and although it wasn't the best circus act in the world it was entertaining and I rather enjoyed them. The rest of the day was a combination of playing soccer on the beach, shopping, tanning:-( ), and wings at the Hard Rock Cafe. Also, we ended up stopping by Aaron's father's place without Aaron (it felt wrong) before heading back to Brisbane.

Did you go to church on Easter??

I sure did. A few of us went to church with Lilo (another one of our Aussie friends). The church was called LifePlace. It was rather nice. Good message with sound effects from the torrential downpour that was going on outside. Also, the people of the church were really nice and welcoming. Surprisingly, there were a couple of Americans on staff/volunteer groups. I swear one of the staff dudes looked just like a 30 y/o version this guy and he acted like him too! So yeah, it reminded me of our service back home and I'm glad that I went.

God bless,

Kyron S. Whitfield
